Businessman from Samarinda, Jusuf Hamka intends to build 1,000 oriental-designed mosques throughout Indonesia. He wanted to unite the diversity between Islam and Chinese.
With the intention of building 1,000 mosques, Jusuf also ordered his children to continue the construction when he was called by the khaliq. This year, God willing, Jusuf will build 10 mosques.
"Thankfully, if I was there I could make 100, so there are 900 children, slowly but surely, the important thing is, but I have always wanted to make a mosque with an oriental style," said Jusuf to detik.com.
Jusuf saw that middle eastern mosque designs are common in Indonesia. Thus, a mosque with an oriental look will become an attractive new icon to become a religious tourist spot.
"It's not because I want to make a Chineseization, no, because the Middle East style has millions of mosques. So I want to make a place of worship that can also be a place for religious tourism," said Jusuf.
The inspiration also comes from people who have forgotten the importance of diversity. In fact, other countries such as the Philippines and Thailand have been united without the terms indigenous and non-indigenous.
"So Indonesia as a nation that is more democratic than them since 98 times has lost to them. Well, finally, I have to start. If I don't start, who will?" said Jusuf.
"And the truth is, what I do is not against the people, there is no conflict with the Chinese either, that's why I knit diversity. So we continue the diversity between Islam and Chinese, we try to blend it," said Jusuf.
The construction of 1,000 mosques which is Jusuf's dream will have the same design. He is also willing to help renovate the prayer room or mosque, as long as it is with oriental architecture.
"So, the mosque or prayer room that I want to help has to have an oriental look, if not, you can't, because I really want to make a tourist place as well as a place of worship and a place to knit diversity," said Jusuf.
