How to protect children and teens from adult DM Instagram

This month,Instagram will introduce a new policy that limits interaction between teens and adults to make its platform friendlier and safer for teens.

This new security feature will restrict adult users from sending direct messages (DM) to teens who don't follow their accounts. This rule does not apply to adults who are family members or other trusted adults.

If an adult user tries to DM a teenager who doesn't follow their account, a notification will appear saying they can't send the message.

If a teenager has interacted with an adult user via DM, they will receive a security warning that provides the option to report or block the adult user's account.

The alert will also remind users not to feel pressured to respond to messages and to be careful when sending photos, videos or information with strangers.

Teenage users will see this security warning if Instagram's moderation system notices suspicious behavior from adult users. One such behavior is to send a large number of message requests or friendships to users under the age of 18.

Instagram said this feature will be available in several countries starting this month, and will be launched globally in the near future, as quoted from The Verge, Thursday (18/3/2021).

This Facebook-owned application is also developing new artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to detect a person's age when registering a new account.

This technology allows Instagram to implement security rules for teen accounts even if they lie about their age when registering a new account. But Instagram doesn't explain how this system works.

New teenagers on Instagram will also be encouraged to make their profiles private. If they choose to create a public account, Instagram will provide a notification reminding them of the benefits of a private account and check their security settings.
