  • Follow the application instructions provided by your local SNAP office. Some states allow residents to apply online, while others will require you to download and print an application, call to send it to you, or collect it in person. Visit the SNAP site to find out if your country allows online applications. Each state's application process will be different
  • Submit your application. Again, state procedures are different. However you can (either via the Internet, snail mail, or in person), submit your application. It's worth noting that if you apply in person, you may be automatically screened for expedited processing, so you can receive benefits faster.
  • Schedule and attend an interview. During the interview, you will need to provide certain documentation about your financial situation.
  • Get your EBT card. If you meet all the requirements and take part in the interview, you will receive notification of your soon-to-be benefits. By post, you will receive a plastic electronic card (EBT card) which you will use when shopping.
  • Follow the rules after you receive your card. SNAP benefits can only be used to purchase approved food items. If you try to buy an item that is not approved, you may be penalized. In some cases, your benefits can be taken away.
  • Recertify your benefits. After you have received SNAP benefits for a certain time, you will need to "recertify", or report to your local office to continue receiving benefits.
