Google's parent company Alphabet Inc launched a news showcase platform in India with 30 local news publishers. This aims to avoid the spread of misinformation related to the second wave of COVID-19 which is getting more violent.
It is known that Indians rely on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for information related to COVID-19 in the midst of a critical shortage of medical supplies.
Google will pay partner publishers for their online content and allow them to curate it, while allowing users limited access to paywall stories. Unfortunately, Google did not reveal the details of the amount further.
"Today's announcement comes at a very difficult time in India. Indians are looking for authoritative news and information as the COVID-19 crisis deepens," Google said in a blog.
The second most populous country in the world is experiencing one of the deadliest outbreaks, with the total COVID-19 case burden crossing 25 million as of Tuesday (18/5).
Previously, the Indian government had an argument with Twitter where last month they asked Twitter to delete hundreds of tweets criticizing the Indian government regarding its handling of the virus outbreak.
Google services launched globally late last year and is used in more than 12 countries, including Germany, Brazil and the United Kingdom.
Content from Indian publisher partners in English and Hindi will start appearing in News Showcase panels on Google News and in Discover. Google added that they will also launch an Indian language version this year.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has also pledged USD 18 million or around Rp. 257 billion as new funding for India including advertising support for public health campaigns.
